To Be—Named is a multi-sited collaborative project exploring the cultural politics of names and naming though how names are created and used to shape, reshape, and sometimes mis-shape, our worlds. The project includes an edited volume, a new media art exhibition and this website.
Acts of naming are not merely descriptive or representative—they have creative capacity and actively take part in shaping the interactions and worlds in which they are embedded. Our intention is to help shape in a constructive way discussions about the power dynamics involved in, and consequences from, who defines who through naming. By working collaboratively, we hope to better understand relationships between the politics of language, identity formation, and different ways of knowing.
