Call Me By My Name

Call Me By My Name is a project that began as a video on my personal Instagram page about my feelings about my own name. I created the video as a protest against white supremacy, but also to explain the deeper harms that can occur when someone denies you your humanity by refusing to say to your name. Many people contacted me to tell me their own stories and for the first time in 42 years, I felt less alone. Now, I post videos of people sharing their names, how to pronounce it, spell it, who gave it to them, if it is has cultural significance and what they love about it. I wanted to do this for those who have suffered the consequences of living in a racist society. This project is also a way that we can inspire others to take pride in their unique names and remember the depth of their meanings.
