The Secret of Eucalyptus

On March 3rd 1991, at the time of the Gulf War, Heideren leaves his home in Kurdistan and crosses to Turkey in order to escape to Europe.

After 6 years of wandering, he crosses the borders of Greece and asks for- and is granted political asylum. For 3 years he stays in a refugee camp in Greece, and when the right moment comes, he leaves for Germany via Italy, after first wrapping his documents in a nylon bag and burying them at the root of a eucalyptus, thus sacrificing his name, identity and past.

Arriving in Germany after a difficult and dangerous journey, he will appear before the judges without any documents in his hands and, under the name of Osman, he will ask for political asylum presenting a different story about his past, changing the names of his family and of his hometown.

If he fails to convince them, the court is obliged to send him to the country where he first requested political asylum leaving Kurdistan, that is, Greece, where his true identity and residence documents are buried.

Then they will emerge from the soil to prevent the nightmare deportation back to his homeland.

Katerina Skordou unearths and narrates a 20-year story of a political migrant, Heideren, who, crossing to Europe to claim a safer and better life, had to sacrifice his real identity. Katerina also reveals a poem written by Heideren’s friend, Keify, during the time they were living in the same camp. This poem is part of the story for all persons/parties involved.
